Proposal Defence

Your proposal defence is an important step to convince your examiners and research panel that you have a proper plan in place to carry out your research. This course provides you with the necessary skills required to defend your research proposal. You will learn the right skills needed to convince the panel that your data collection procedure is ethical and valid and that you are able to carry out your research within the given timeframe.

Topics Covered

  1. Preparing Your Defence
There are a few things you need to know, and do before your defence presentation. Make sure these steps are all taken care of so you are not stressed out at the very last minute. This course will provide you with a checklist that you can use to make sure you stay on top of things.
  1. Body of Your Presentation
Make sure you have all the important information that you need the panel to see for your proposal. You need to convince the panel that your research is important, you are contributing to your area of study, you are aware of previous research conducted in your field and you are able to use the right methodology to conduct your research.
  1. Design and Delivery
Many students take this for granted and often give this section of their presentation the least attention. What are the right fonts, font size and colours to use? Animation might be an effective way to convey your key information but how much animation is too much?
  1. Presentation
How to deliver your proposal confidently? Eye contact, body language, tonal inflection are all crucial elements of a presentation and cannot be taken for granted.
  1. Handling Questions
Understand the difference between confidence and arrogance. Q&A is an important section of your defence and there are a number of common questions that panels always ask and expect a particular kind of answer. Master this and you will be able to handle the Q&A more confidently.
  1. What Do You Do After Your Defence?
The work does not end after your presentation. There is more work with your supervisor and this is where the real work begins.

At the end, you’ll be able to…

  • Understand the different elements needed to deliver a good defence
  • Structure and design your defence slides in a methodical and cohesive manner
  • Deliver your proposal confidently
  • Handle Q&A sessions confidently during the defence
